The roots of Coldpack can be traced to an inspiration for a better insulating system than traditional foam products. The founders listened to customer complaints about bulky eps and urethane containers that cracked, leaked and squeaked. The result was the development of the AirLiner product line. The subsequent addition of associated perishable packaging products all help to provide cold chain solutions for temperature sensitive products worldwide.

The core technology used in AirLiner was developed in the early 1990's under a Department of Energy research grant and patented by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The inventors of this "Gas-Filled Panel" concept developed a unique and highly efficient geometry but the applications that they had envisioned had not materialized. At that time, a company called Cargotech recognized that the gas-filled panel concept offered unique benefits for the shipment of perishables. They were then awarded an exclusive license for the use of this technology.

Originally founded in 2000 as Cargo Technology Inc., (Cargotech), the primary purpose of the company was to meet consumer's demands for alternatives to foam. Hence, the development and launch of the unique AirLiner line of products. With initial equity investments from Hamilton Technology Ventures, LP and the United Parcel Service (UPS) Strategic Enterprise Fund, Cargotech began manufacturing AirLiner in the spring of 2001. Cargotech?s history continued with additional rounds of financing from a select group of institutional and individual investors that supported its continued expansion and penetration of AirLiner products into the insulated packaging industry.

By 2003, Cargotech showed continued growth in its AirLiner customer base in the United States. This was accomplished by targeting the markets that require perishable packaging materials for small parcel "Cold Chain" insulation. These markets include pharmaceuticals, biotech products, high end seafood and meats, gourmet foods, chocolates, fresh cut flowers, live animals and specialty industrial materials.

During this same time, a packaging solution that incorporated AirLiner and the new perishable packaging product, the T-Zone Tray, was accepted and validated by the official French post office, Chronopost. The goal was to develop a home delivery business for the Paris based Natoora and help expand its distribution of fresh and perishable food products across France.

With the success of Natoora and other French companies, Coldpack was created with the investment of five Natoora shareholders: Charles-Henri Lehideux, Pierre and Charles de Croisset, Guy Paillaud, and Philippe Montenay in November 2003. And then in December 2003, Coldpack inked a deal with Cargotech that established Coldpack as the exclusive distribution company for AirLiner in Europe.

Throughout 2004 and 2005 both companies continued to expand within the United States and Europe. In mid 2005 Coldpack and Cargo Technology decided to pool their resources and merge both companies together. In December of that year, Coldpack purchased the majority shares of Cargotech and was then incorporated as Coldpack, SAS.

This strategic synthesis established Coldpack as a truly global provider of cold chain packaging solutions. This also allowed Coldpack to gain more than adequate resources for the continued development of the AirLiner technology and a wide range of design and testing capabilities. As an added benefit, Coldpack is now capable of offering a growing list of packaging products like the T-Zone Tray, gel refrigerants and corrugated containers.

As we move forward, Coldpack provides its customers with innovative packaging solutions. We are determined to protect the perishable products of all our customers, big or small.
